Scambusters 2023

We’re back to fight crypto scammers, fraudsters & bad players in the industry.

In 2021 we launched our first ever Scambusters initiative. You can read more about our worthy winner of ‘Scambusters 2021' below.

Now we’re back - with Scambusters 2023.

Once again, we’re inviting our community to nominate crypto scam cases that can be considered for our 2023 top-10 shortlist.

From 21 April to 28 April 2023, our community will be invited to vote for the case - out of our shortlisted top 10 - that they feel most deserve free litigation support from our shortlisted selection.

What is Scambusters?

Periodically we run our Scambusters initiative whereby we invite our community to alert us to crypto scams.
We then invite the community to vote from our experts’ shortlisted nominations. The winning case will receive free investigative support courtesy of Liti Capital.
Nominated cases must involve a crypto scam and can originate from any geographic location, and must have no confidentiality provisions in place that would prevent disclosure.
There are no stipulations as to their nature (bar them being a crypto scam of fraud), the number of victims involved (there can be an  individual to multiple victims), the time frame, and the finances at stake.
Once the nominations have been received from our community and shortlisted to 10, the cases are put to our community for voting.
The 10 shortlisted cases will be showcased on the Liti Capital website and within the LITI app.
wLITI or LITI token holders can then vote for the case they believe is most deserving of support.

Why is Scambusters so important?

Trust in the crypto sector has been damaged by scammers, con artists and fraudsters.
With a vested interest in cleaning up the cryptocurrency market, we’re committed to financing crypto-fraud cases that have affected our community members.

Cryptocurrency Scams Have Soared

According to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), more than 46,000 people have reported losing over $1 billion in crypto to scams since the start of 2021, – that’s about one out of every four dollars reported lost - more than any other payment method.
Scammers are finding creative ways to con people into fraudulent crypto investments. One type of scheme offers investment "tips" online that redirect consumers to fraudulent sites. In another, scammers pose as celebrities, such as Elon Musk, and trick consumers into sending them cryptocurrency by promising that the celebrity will contribute to their investment.

Scambusters 2021 - The Winner

The winner of Scambusters 2021 was a victim and her daughter, who were scammed when she entered a giveaway seemingly sponsored by a major exchange on YouTube.
The scammer somehow impersonated the exchange and got access to her wallet. She lost over $50,000 in a major coin. The police and the exchange were useless and non-co-operative, ignoring requests for help or refusing to offer a refund. This scam was especially devastating to the victim as she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer prior to becoming a victim of the scam.
In fact, the reason behind her interest in the giveaway was the disadvantaged situation she was already in.
Liti Capital provided invaluable intelligence into the matter, which was provided to the police.

Liti is committed to helping rid the Crypto community of scammers, con artists, fraudsters, and bad players.
Through its Scambusters initiative, Liti Capital is supporting its community by tracking down and prosecuting criminals on behalf of victims, using the same resources as with its “day job” of litigation finance - legal teams, strategists, and intelligence operatives.

LITI SCAMBUSTERS VOTING RULES

  • Nominations can be received between Monday 3 April 2023, 12noon GMT and Friday 7 April 2023, 6pm GMT. Please email scambusters@liticapital.com with details of the case you would like to nominate.
  • Voting begins on Friday 21 April 2023, 2pm GMT and ends on Friday 28 April 2023, 6pm GMT.

  • You can vote for more than one case.
  • Vote by pledging all or just a portion of the LITI or wLITI tokens that you hold. Pledging tokens does not lock up nor send tokens anywhere. Voting is done by signing with your wallet a message indicating the number of tokens that you pledge to a particular case.
  • Every wLITI pledged counts as 1 vote and every LITI counts as 5000 votes.
  • Total tokens pledged across all cases combined cannot exceed the number of tokens you hold.
  • Liti Capital will tally votes at Ethereum block #### if at the time of the counting your wallet holds the amount of tokens that you pledged, your vote will be considered valid.
  • The winning case will be announced on Sunday 30 April 2023.

HOW TO VOTE

  1. Go to https://app.liticapital.com
  2. Click on the ‘Voting’ tab.
  3. You will see a list of the cases.
  4. Click on the case you would like to vote for. A window will pop up.
  5. Select if you want to vote with wLITI or LITI and then enter the amount you want to pledge for that particular case and click submit. When you vote, your tokens never leave your wallet nor lock them up.
  6. You will be asked to confirm a message with your MetaMask wallet. There won’t be any fees charged.
  7. Repeat the process if you would like to vote for more cases.
  8. At the closing of the voting period, Liti Capital will validate your votes by verifying that the total number of tokens pledged across all cases is not greater than the number of tokens in your wallet. The validation is made at a specific Ethereum block number after the closing of the voting period.
